        Spoiler Alert!

From the creators of the globally popular webtoon "Sweet Home" - Carnby Kim and YoungChan Hwang, "Bastard" is a psychological/crime thriller about a young boy whose circumstances force him to become an accomplice to murder. Serial murder.

The webtoon starts off with a prologue (Ep. 0) where we're first introduced to the premise and then the characters. The news on TV is abuzz with incidents of kidnapping and organ trafficking, highlighting the inefficiency of governmental authorities in handling such crimes. In addition, there are rumors about 4 girls being abducted from the same neighborhood in one year. Just as we're about to hear more, a woman turns the TV off. She's tutoring a young boy at home, who seems to be zoning out. His father comes into the room and asks him to answer his teacher before announcing that he's leaving for a business trip. After he leaves, the teacher tries to make small talk, asking about his father and their house. The boy gets up to go to the washroom, and what happens next sets the tone for the rest of the series.

The boy comes out with a sledgehammer and batters the woman to death, explaining that the days his father went on a business trip were the days that someone went missing in their neighborhood. This boy is SeonWoo Jin, the character that has been offered to Park JiHoon.

Now, from the prologue alone, it is natural to infer that SeonWoo Jin is behind the murders and abductions talked about in the news. However, we soon find out that it is not him but his father, SeonWoo DongSu, who is the true psychopath behind it all, and Jin is forced to do his bidding. Jin's father is an amicable gentleman, by appearance, and has quite the charm.

He's successful in his career as a CEO and seems to be the kind of person who is easy to trust. However, in reality, he is manipulative, abusive, and sadistic, with no moral compass of his own. He does have principles, though, that suggest he considers murder to be "natural" since people indirectly "kill" each other all the time.

On the other hand, Jin is a quiet, reserved, and ordinary young high school student, but he also has a dark side as a result of all the trauma his father has put him through. Afraid that he will be disposed of if he can't be of any use, Jin is perpetually stuck in his father's murderous schemes, luring in unsuspecting victims with his innocent act. However, he's determined to fight back once he is ready.

One day at school, Jin is bullied severely until a new transfer student Yoon Kyun saves him. He's taken to the hospital, where his father shows up and meets her for the first time, taking an immediate interest in her. Later in the story, Kyun and Jin end up dating, but as his father's urge to murder Kyun grows, so does Jin's insanity.

Not only is Kyun a love interest for Jin, but she is also his "anchor", holding him back from his violent tendencies. As it turns out, just like his father, Jin also enjoyed the thrill of murder before he developed amnesia and grew to be disgusted by the idea. So, now, his father keeps him under his thumb to make sure he does not rebel and even prohibits him from working out, lest he grows stronger than him.

SeonWoo Jin is definitely the type of character we can easily see Park JiHoon playing. His ability to portray complex emotions effortlessly and with the most delicate nuance is perfectly suited to the myriad shades of Jin. In particular, since Jin is a morally grey character for the most part, who grapples with his own reality, it will be interesting to see the glory of Park JiHoon's duality again.
