5 Pieces Of Dating Advice For All Stages Of A Relationship From K-Drama "True To Love"

        ENA

K-Dramas offer many things from pure entertainment to heartwarming backstories. They are an emotional rollercoaster ride that we do not dare disembark from. We become immersed in the characters, various relationships, and of course, the heart-fluttering romance. ENA’s “True To Love” touches on all of this and so much more.

The romantic comedy is led by Yoo InNa and Yoon HyunMin as its main leads. The drama depicts the story of dating coach and novelist Yeon BoRa (Yoo InNa), who works under the alias of Deborah. She comes across Lee SooHyuk (Yoon HyunMin), a publishing planner at a publishing company. In relationships, he can be indifferent and cold. The two become involved in each other's lives and go through various changes.

As Yeon BoRa is the titular character and a dating coach, “True To Love” is rightly filled with dating advice. While some parts are exaggerated, “True To Love” tiptoes the line of reality and fiction. Its depiction of relationships and the process of them is relatable, genuine, and strikes every heartstring imaginable.

While lessons on relationships that stem from K-Dramas should be taken with a grain of salt, “True To Love” is like the sound, reliable best friend that you cannot help but listen to.

Here is some dating advice from ENA’s “True To Love” for all stages of a relationship.

Note: this article may contain spoilers.

        1. Make Your Own Destiny

Pursuing romance can be frightening and a downright daunting task. To avoid this added stress, a handful of people may leave it up to destiny or fate to decide whether or not they get into a relationship. While this might work for a few, life very rarely places something as precious as a relationship so easily into our laps.

"True To Love" teaches its viewers to be confident in their pursuit of love and to take action. In the very first episode, we see a change in heart within Lee SooHyuk as he decides to finally and clearly express his feelings with a ring. While our own confessions of love do not need to be as grand or expensive, sometimes making our own destiny is the best course of action.

        2. Express Yourself Often

The Lee SooHyuk we see at the beginning of the drama is pragmatic, logical, and doesn't believe that love needs to be expressed. However, we learn that this inability to be affectionate and to even define the relationship with his partner leads to their eventual break up.

While not everyone shares the same love language, BoRa makes a good point that if someone is in love, they will express it. Whether it's through words of affirmation, gift giving, or something as simple as physical touch, those innermost feelings will become tangible for the naked eye to see. "True To Love" encourages us to take every chance to express ourselves in a relationship and to do it often.

        3. Consistency Is Key

Relationships are built upon a variety of different things. This includes factors like compatibility, trust, and consistency. While spontaneity brings fun and excitement to any relationship, "True To Love" teaches us that we should remain consistent and steadfast while pursuing love.

While Yang JinHo (iKON's Ju-ne) and Yeon BoMi (Kim YeJi) didn't start off on the same page, through his perseverance and consistency, he was able to win her heart. By consistently texting BoMi, JinHo showed that his interest never waned and his eyes were set on her alone. Seeing this, she eventually came to accept his romantic advances and decided to start a relationship with him. Although we do not need take the same steps as Yang JinHo, consistency is definitely important in any stage of a relationship.

        4. Know When It's The End

"True To Love" does well in expressing the aww-inducing, heart-fluttering romance that we all know and love. But the ENA drama also does a magnificent job in portraying the tail end of a relationship. It's heartbreakingly sad and soul crushing, but reaching the end is natural for some couples.

Both of our main characters go through devastating break ups that leave them depressed and heartbroken. We see them go through the motions of their daily lives, yet break down when left to dwell on the past. However, eventually we learn with them that the end is simply inevitable and something we all must acknowledge sooner or later. This acceptance is perhaps the first step on our character's path to healing.

        5. Time Is The Best Remedy

Even when we've accepted the end of a relationship, we can often be left in a confused, disoriented state. While like this, we can make rash decisions like showing up at our exes house or hysterically asking them to take us back. If there's one thing that "True To Love" teaches us on how to cope with a break up, it's that we should let time do its thing.

While we might falter and shed some necessary tears, time will make it so we are able to overcome our heartbreak. In "True To Love", the break up between Yeon BoRa and Noh JuHwan (2PM's ChanSung) might feel long and drawn out by K-Drama standards, but it serves as a good representation of real life.

Some break ups are messy, draining a ridiculous amount of energy from us as we make half-hearted attempts to move forward. We witness BoRa go through a rollercoaster ride of emotions. However, once time has passed and our titular main lead makes an effort to truly accept her current situation, she's able to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Time allowed her to process her emotions and take the necessary steps towards a future where she's able to firmly stand on her own once more.

While these pieces of advice do not apply to everyone, "True To Love" sheds light on all parts of a relationship, good and bad.
